W. BasketballSaturday, January 2, 2010 Lady Cougars Open New Year with 66-56 Home Loss to Fort Valley StateColumbus, Ga. - The Columbus State women's basketball team opened the new year on Saturday with a 66-56 home loss to Fort Valley State to end its winning streak at five games. FVSU improved to 9-0 on the season, while CSU dropped to 6-4 on the season. ... full story Saturday, December 19, 2009 Lady Cougars Cruise to Fifth Straight Win, 95-32 over Edward WatersSavannah, Ga. -- Columbus State held Edward Waters College to just three first half field goals and cruised to a 95-32 victory in the Hampton Inn & Suites Fall Finals Classic hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State. The 63-point margin of victory set a new Alumni Arena record for largest margin of victory, eclipsing a 49-point Francis Marion win over Clayton State in the 1998 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. "This was a really good way to head into the Christmas break," said CSU head coach Jonathan Norton. "I was a little afraid of a letdown today after we got such a big win yesterday, but our players came out and took care of business. I am really proud of our defense as they had another really good game today. Now we can all enjoy Christmas and then come back and get ready to face Fort Valley and then our conference schedule. Freshman Kelsie Weynand scored nine of her game-high 16 points in the first half as the Lady Cougars ran out to a 42-14 lead at the break. The CSU defense held EWC to just 3-33 shooting (9 percent) in the half, while the offense shot just under 47 percent and hit three of six three-point shots. The Lady Cougars continued to stretch their lead in the second half as head coach Jonathan Norton substituted freely. Norton was able to rest his starters and get his reserves some valuable minutes. Every player in uniform scored at least two points. In addition to Weynand's 16 points, Turelle Jones also came off the bench to score 14 and grab five rebounds. Phebe Smith scored 12 points and had seven rebounds in just 16 minutes of playing time. Monique Jefferson added 11 points and was 3-4 from long range, while Nakita Holt contributed nine points, seven assists, and tied with Hali Moore and Lauren Ringfield for the team lead with eight each. CSU shot 44 percent overall from the floor on the day and hit seven of 14 three-point attempts. The defense forced 33 turnovers. "We really did a good job of attacking the basket today and getting to the free-throw line. We shot 71 percent at the line and that is a big improvement, so that was good news. It was also really good to get some people some floor time. That will help us down the stretch," Norton said. Ebony Presha led Edward Waters with seven points. CSU closes the 2009 portion of the schedule with its fifth straight win. The Lady Cougars will welcome 2010 and Fort Valley State to the Lumpkin Center on January 2 at 3 p.m. in a non-conference matchup. The Peach Belt Conference opener will take place on January 9 at 1:30 against North Georgia. ... full story Friday, December 18, 2009 Lady Cougars Nip #12 Tampa 57-56 in SavannahSavannah, Ga. -- Columbus State's Lauren Ringfield got a clutch offensive rebound with seven seconds left against #12 Tampa, and then hit the second of two free-throws to break a tie and give the Lady Cougars a 57-56 win. The point was the only score of the game for Ringfield and could not have come at a better time. ... full story Tuesday, December 8, 2009 Defense Comes Up Big in Overtime Win for CSU at Valdosta StateValdosta, Ga. -- For the second night in a row, Columbus State and Valdosta State hooked up in an exciting basketball game at the VSU P.E. Complex, but this time it was the women going toe-to-toe.
