Meet the Cougars Night a Rousing Success

Columbus State Softball held its first ever Meet the Cougars Night last weekend, to a tremendous positive response from family and fans of the team.  Attendance was estimated at 130 people, nearly twice the expected number despite minimal advertising.  The CSU softball staff say next year’s event will be more heavily publicized and will feature more events in anticipation of an even larger crowd.

After the Lady Cougars were introduced to an ecstatic crowd, the night opened with batting practice for the Lady Cougars, who were joined by several former softball campers and other local youths.  Fans also had the opportunity to hit against their preferred Cougar pitcher, many batters facing their own daughters with modest success – to the delight of the spectators.  A homerun derby featured twenty hitters slugging off the pitching machine while most of the fans shagged balls in the outfield.  Junior pitcher Jennifer Isasi’s father Roy was noted as being especially zealous, undoubtedly receiving a few grass stains for his enthusiastic efforts.

Head coach Brad Huskisson says of the night, “We were very pleased with the turnout and appreciate all the support from everyone.  We look forward to everyone coming and supporting us in the spring.  A large and passionate crowd can really help energize the team during games.”

CSU softball kicks off the 2010 season on February 5, with an away game versus Brewton Parker at the Georgia Southwestern tournament.  The Lady Cougars’ first home event will be against Augusta State in a doubleheader on March 14, at 2:00 and 4:00 PM (EST).... full story

COUGAR OF THE WEEK

Cougar men's basketball player Nick Gagnon has earned this week's Cougar Athlete of the Week honor. The senior from nearby Lanett, Ala., has been a behind-the-scenes role player for the Cougars this season, but has performed extremely well. In the two games this week, he averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing, helping the Cougars to two wins. One of those wins came against then #2 Valdosta State on the road as Gagnon went 4-6 from the floor with six rebounds in 33 minutes of floor time.
