HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Columbus State University won their third straight PBC Commissioner’s Cup, which was presented at the recent league annual meetings in Hilton Head. The Cougars won four conference championships this year and become only the third program in PBC history to win the all-sports award for a third straight time. Armstrong Atlantic State finished second while USC Aiken was third in the standings.

Columbus State captured regular-season conference championships in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer and baseball. All told, the Cougars earned 69.5 of a possible 94 points available to them for a .739 percentage. The Commissioner’s Cup is calculated using a weighted average that does not punish an institution that may not sponsor all PBC Championship sports. CSU competes in 10 of the 12 conference sports.

Armstrong Atlantic State received 59.5 of a possible 84 for a .708 rating, just 31 percentage points behind CSU, the closest margin for the commissioner’s cup in three years. The Pirates won the men’s and women’s tennis championships and finished second in women’s soccer and softball. AASU has finished fourth or better in the standings in 14 of the 17 years in which the league has awarded the cup.

In a record-setting 2007-08, USC Aiken had four conference champions and five teams compete in NCAA Tournament play. Volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and golf all won regular season PBC titles while women’s cross country and baseball joined volleyball, men’s basketball, and golf in postseason play. USCA’s third-place finish tied their best result ever as they were also third in 1993.

The full commissioner’s cup standings can be found here.

COUGAR OF THE WEEK

Cougar men's basketball player Nick Gagnon has earned this week's Cougar Athlete of the Week honor. The senior from nearby Lanett, Ala., has been a behind-the-scenes role player for the Cougars this season, but has performed extremely well. In the two games this week, he averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing, helping the Cougars to two wins. One of those wins came against then #2 Valdosta State on the road as Gagnon went 4-6 from the floor with six rebounds in 33 minutes of floor time.
